History of the Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of the United States was established in 1789 by the Constitution of the United States. In its history the Court consisted of nine members appointed by the President of the United States. Nevertheless, the Court of Justice crossed several different periods since its inception, every American law affecting as we know it. The Marshall Court (1801-1835) Under the Marshall Court, Marbury v. Madison (1803) cemented the institution of judicial review, ruling that the Supreme Court has the right to overturn any unconstitutional law passed by the U.S. Senate.The Fuller Court (1888-1910) Under the Fuller Court, Plessy v. Ferguson segregation, ruling that upheld public facilities, so long as they were equal in quality, could legally be divided along racial lines.The Warren Court (1953-1969) Under the Warren Court, Brown v. Board of Education ruled that the precedent set in Plessy v. Ferguson was unconstitutional, making segregation in public schools illegal.The Burger Court (1969-1986) Under the Burger Court, Roe v. Wade (1973) ruled that certain circumstances afford any woman the constitutional right to have an abortion, in a decision that is heavily contested to this day.The Rehnquist Court (1986-2005) Under the Rehnquist Court, Bush v. Gore (2000) terminated the recount process in the 2000 presidential election, George Bush to legally allowing assumes the title of President Elect.
